Inception and Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind- similar or not?

Well well well! Big hello everyone! I know I have been extremely lazy. I guess everyone starts the blog with a similar tone now a days. So I shouldn't be so sad.

I saw Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind yesterday. A very good movie and a must watch. Somehow it motivated me to write this one. Before I jump into the purpose of this post I should remind you that you must have seen both the movies. Spoiler Alert! So if you haven't, go watch them and this post will wait for you.

I had seen Inception in the theater, right when it was released along with my school friends. Little did we know before going to movie that its gonna be so puzzling and awesome. I still remember the look on everyone's face when we got out. And the question: "Samjha kya?"  (did you understand?)

I had understood the movie in the theater itself. But there was so much fuss and discussion about the last scene that I was forced to think that I missed something. So I watched it again.

Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind has been on my list for long time. I remember many times I had planned and later cancelled just because I was not in the rightest mood to watch. I give special respect to IMDB top 250 movies. Its like studies for me. You have to be in the right mood. Or there is no point.
So finally I watched it. And it was worth the wait. :)

As the movie (eternal sunshine) progressed I was somehow reminded of Inception. I don't know if you felt that too. Several scenes in the movies were 90 percent similar as in Inception. I thought over it. Their is a striking similarity between these two movies and yet they stand apart.

Both the movies have beautifully presented in what should be the most complex of the concepts. In Inception, its about shared dreams and dreams within a dream on the other hand Eternal sunshine is about memory erasing. There is a thin line between the two. After all, dreams are projections of your memories. At one point in the movies you see Jim (Joel) in a similar situation as in Inception. He is sleeping and dreaming. There is a machine attached to him..although not similar but to keep track of his dreams. Same purpose.

Both the movies use some sort of gadgets to get into the brain. The most interesting part is in Inception Leonardo infiltrates subconscious of his targets to extract information and  implant a new idea.  Although not entirely that basically means altering or erasing memory. Puzzled? Further you see that both need a person to take care while the subject gets in and out of the dream. In both the cases, the real world can be felt within the dream. In Inception, its the water and the sound and in Eternal Sunshine its the voices Jim hears. Both carve for there pasts. Both have love issues. Both the main characters cling on to memories of the love in there life, the times they spent together which are basically just there subconscious projections.

As it happened, since I saw Inception first, now I don't find Inception so great. Mostly after seeing the similar concepts in Eternal Sunshine of spotless mind.

Christopher Nolan and Michel Gondry both fiddle with the peoples brains and the stuff gets a bit heavy. You don't know if its too much information of less information. You don't want to flip your eyelids just because you feel you might miss something important.  How many movies make you feel like that? Both play with peoples ability to think beyond reality. Its beautiful how they make you comprehend something that surreal. I am happy we have someone so talented and creative. Hats off to both the teams. A masterpiece indeed!
